Following the recent mid-decade redistricting gerrymander in Texas, it has become clear that those in charge of the Republican Party view democracy as an optional part of America. To combat this, Governor Newsom and the Democratic Party of California have announced a redistricting plan of their own. This has drawn accusations of both actions being “undemocratic.” These arguments are short-sighted.

When Republicans remove direct representation from America, it is up to California and its peers to stand up for democracy by reasserting this representation through indirect means. In their pursuit of power, Republicans have nullified representation from millions of Americans. California’s redistricting will be the opposite, acting not for power of the Democrats, but to counter undemocratic power grabs. This restores that power to the American people. Supporting this redistricting is not just equalizing representation; it is an obligation to defend American democracy

To Ensure Democracy California Must Redistrict.
